How do you recognise a good basketball unit?

In this article, we, as a manufacturer of outdoor basketball equipment, would like to give you an overview of what to look out for when buying new equipment. Here, we focus on frequently asked questions from customers and explain to you what defines high product quality.
What types of basketball facilities are there?
A complete outdoor basketball unit consists of several products. These include the basketball post, basketball hoop, backboard and net. Depending on the intended us of the facility, however, a distinction can be made between different variants:
For private use, customers often attach the backboard or even the basketball hoop to a house wall. artec® also has systems for wall mounting in its program. In addition to the rigid aluminium constructions we also offer a foldable version. If the basketball hoop is not needed, it can be folded directly to the wall, so that the hoop does not reach into free space.
For outdoor leisure facilities, schoolyards or sports fields, however, a stationary basketball facility is much more suitable. This is anchored in ground sockets and therefore provides very good stability.
There are also mobile basketball systems that can be moved around. When buying a mobile system, it is essential to ensure that sufficient counterweights are integrated. This ensures that the basketball hoop can be played on without safety concerns. With artec® Sportgeräte, the mobile basketball system consists of high-quality aluminium profiles and includes a weather-resistant backboard as well as a weatherproof basket. For moving the facility, you also need a lifting and transport roller. With this you can easily move the mobile basketball system due to the wide polyamide wheels.
What is the height of a basketball unit?
The official height of the basketball hoop is 3.05 meters, which is about 10 American feet. This height is measured from the ground to the top of the hoop. The backboard of a basketball unit is 1.80 meters wide and 1.05 meters high, according to official specifications. The lower edge of the board is 2.90 meters above the ground. Also, the upper edge of the hoop is placed exactly 15 centimetres above the lower edge of the backboard. The ring diameter is 45 centimetres.
The dimensions just mentioned also comply with the official regulations of the American NBA. For amateur sport, the height of the professional league may be too high, so that the height of the facilities can of course be varied. For basketball facilities, other uses can also be considered, such as, for example:

- Streetball
Streetball refers to the free basketball game in the street. In most cases, teams of three people play against each other. There are neither referees nor standard rules, so the social skills of the players are significantly boosted. Outdoor basketball facilities can be used for streetball also.
What does the backboard consist of?
Outdoor backboards are made of different weatherproof materials:
- Coplast
- Aluminium
- Scrim fabric
The backboards made of Coplast have a multi-layer sandwich construction. They can also be manufactured with a moulded rubber edge, which reduces the impact noise of the ball. The aluminium backboard is extremely robust and has a wall thickness of 8 millimetres. Additionally, it is exceedingly weatherproof. This backboard, too, is available in a version with sound insulation. The basketball backboard made of scrim fabric also leads to considerably reduced impact noise. The backboards with sound insulation are ideal for the use in residential areas.
The artec® backboard comes in two different sizes. On the one hand, we offer the backboard in the professional standard size of 1.80 x 1.05 meters. On the other hand, you can also get the backboard in 1.20 x 0.90 meters.
Basketball hoop and net
What needs to be considered?
A basketball hoop can be characterised by whether it is permanently installed, foldable or removable. Stationary basketball hoops remain rigid under load. If the load is too heavy, the basket may bend downwards. If this is to be avoided, you can also choose a foldable basketball hoop. The baskets from artec® are either – depending on the product – foldable from 35 kg, from 75 kg or from 105 kg. This function can prevent the basket from bending or even breaking off the backboards. The basketball hoops are also available as removable hoops. In this case, a stainless steel holder is attached to the backboard so that the hoop can be removed from it at any time. The basketball hoops are all made of solid steel. They are also hot-dip galvanised and thus protected against rust. This makes the basket resistant to wind and weather.
The basketball nets are made of nylon as a standard. For outdoor basketball facilities, however, we recommend reinforced nets made of different materials:
- Steel
- Stainless steel
- Hercules rope
An extremely stable basketball net is the chain net, which can be made of steel or stainless steel. The surface of the steel chain net is hot-dip galvanised, which protects the material from rust. Another possibility of a robust net is the basketball net made of Hercules rope with steel inlay. This net is just as resistant to vandalism as the chain net and at the same time offers the advantage of being quieter.
How safe are the facilities?
The safety of the athletes has the highest priority for us as a manufacturer of basketball facilities. Therefore, our sports equipment is of course manufactured according to the current DIN regulations and has a TÜV certificate.
When manufacturing basketball facilities, for example, it is important to ensure that the area underneath the basketball hoop is free of objects. This reduces the risk of injury for the athletes significantly. Although the basketball post itself is outside the playing field, it should also be equipped with protective padding.
