Technical requirements for shot put toe boards

The working committee NA 112-01-01 AA “Track and field equipment” has recently published a new DIN standard for shot put toe boards . DIN 79007-1:2019-03 consists of three different parts in which the requirements and test methods for

be defined.

The scope of the new DIN regulation is indoor and outdoor for the disciplines shot put, discus throw and hammer throw. In this article, we would like to reproduce below the main technical definitions for the requirements of shot put toe boards.

Functional requirements

to the strength and stability of the shot put toe boards

Regarding the structural strength and stability of the shot put toe boards, the functional requirements define that the boards must be made of wood or other suitable material that will not be damaged during sport-specific use. This refers to the safe prevention of fractures or chipping on the shot put toe board caused by falling shot balls or the impact of the athletes themselves. A permanent change of the board or the detachment from the anchorage must also be safely excluded. In principle, the shot put toe board may consist of several components, which may be solid or hollow. The color is basically defined as white.

The attachment of the shot put toe board must be flush with the inner radius of the circular ring and stably connected to the edging. It must also be possible to fasten the board in such a way that the upper side of the circular ring is completely covered in the area of the board. With regard to the technical design of the boards, it is important to know that force peaks of up to 2,800 N can act on the board due to the caulking foot of a shot-putter! An appropriate technical design must be ensured. The touchable surfaces must be designed according to DIN EN 913:2009-01, 5.1.

Determination of the test procedures

for strength and stability

To test the strength and stability of the shot put toe boards, a shot ball of the competition class for men (7.26 kg) is dropped freely onto the board once from a height of 2.0 meters per test point. After that, visual inspection is used to determine whether the tested board meets the requirements for strength and stability. The three test points of the exclusively curved boards are centrally located in the middle of the board as well as centrally located 100 mm from the outer edges of the board. In contrast, shot put toe boards that are curved on the outside and straight on the inside are tested with five test points. The test points are located in the center of the board, as well as two additional test points each at a distance of 100 mm from the ends of the board (1x centered and 1x at a distance of 500 mm from the inside).
